[Discussion] Desperate for help with corrupted backup
I really need help from the community right now. I made an iTunes backup and resetted my iPhone and then when I tried to restore it the backup kept saying 'corrupt backup'. I really need to fix this coz that one single backup contains so much pictures and memories from the past year. I am using an iPhone 6S Plus and running iOS10.1.1 and my iTunes is ver 12.5.4.42
I did see that alot of people were recommending Decipher Backup Repair but I am tight on money and cannot shell out the 30$.
I also read threads on using Decipher Backup Repair to locate the corrupt files and use iBackupBot to delete those corrupt files. Apparently deleting the 'Lexierra_ja_JP-dynamic-text.dat' file fixes the problem. I did download iBackupBot but then my backup from iTunes is encrypted and iBackupBot says that 'The encrypted backup for iOS10 and later is not supported.'
Guys, what should I do now? Are there any other alternative tools that works like iBackupBot which can delete the 'Lexierra_ja_JP-dynamic-text.dat' file? Or is there a way that I can break the encryption on my backup file and then use it on iBackupBot?
I have tried and read so much for the past day and I am at wits end on what to do. I have no prior experience in the jailbreak community so I desperately ask for help from you guys. Thanks for reading this.
[Fluff] It's 5:20 AM. I stayed up all night dealing the iOS 8.3 upgrade, jailbreaking, and then a corrupt backup
iTunes really is the worst. I use Winamp and Mediamonkey to manage mp3s and Itunes Library Updater to commit those changes to itunes just so I can sync my damn music and not have to rely on itunes for anything else. but that's neither here nor there.
I always do multiple (sequential/repeated) backups of my phone before an iOS upgrade since I've dealt with corrupt backups in the past (way back in iOS 3 / iPhone 3G days). Apparently iTunes now just only keeps 1 most recent update for a particular device.
Anyways..
Started around 9:30pm by updating my iTunes library with a ton of new music that I had been putting off. That took a while.
11pm: Tried doing a full restore of my iPhone 6 from 8.1.1 to 8.3. It kept failing and I started going crazy until I realized I had NO PLS RECOVERY still installed via Cydia.
Removed that and the update restore went swimmingly. Took a shower and got ready for bed. Figured I'd be done in 30 minutes.
Then I used Taig to jailbreak. That went fine.
Then I tried to restore my backup. iTunes said it was 'corrupt or incompatible'. Great. Started trying all sorts of things.
Restored the phone again fresh and tried to restore the backup before Tiag. Same issue.
12:00pm - Scoured reddit and found this recent thread which guided me to Decipher Backup Repair (ha! I'm not paying money for this!) and then to iBackupBot.
12:30am - installed iBackupBot, manually backed up my iTunes backup, and started stripping all sorts of shit from the backup. Found files from 2008 (yep. been backing up and restoring the same chain of backups from all the way back on my iPhone 3G). Also found a lot of OLD photos in the backup that it was mysteriously still keeping somewhere deep in the back. WTF? Photos I legitimately haven't seen in 4-5 years.
1:30am - realize i spent an hour lost in nostalgia looking through old photos.
2:00am - Many restore attempts later, started narrowing in on specific errors about files that either didn't exist or couldn't be created during the restore. Started searching and targeting those files with iBackupBot. Realized that iBackupBot sometimes deletes what I tell it and sometimes doesnt, or sometimes would on the 3rd or 4th time. Weird. I was losing confidence in the tool..
2:30am - Said FUCK IT and deleted a ton of shit from the backup. Anything that I didn't explicitly need or was already in the cloud (contacts, email, most app data, any old photos, all voice memos etc). Just kept system settings and Messages mainly.
3:00am - Eventually stripped my original (corrupted and bloated) backup from 2.0GB down to 150MB. STILL FUCKING WOULDNT RESTORE
3:30am - Said seriously fuck this and paid for Decipher Backup. $30. Uncorrupted the stripped-down backup on the first try! Only took a minute. Why didn't I just do this 4 hours ago?
4:00am - Backup restored successfully. 30GB of Music copying begins.
4:45am - Music copied. I go lay in bed finally to download the apps and hopefully fall asleep. the phone can't load my old apps from iTunes store on the iPhone? it keeps popping up asking for my iCloud password. over and over.. RAGE
5:00am - fuck this shit. Where is my activation key. plug it back into itunes and reorganize all the apps in iTunes. copy those over..
5:15am - write this fucking post.
LESSONS LEARNED: Decipher Backup Repair works GREAT and I highly recommend it. Also test your backup (or trick iTunes into making a full second backup somehow?) before wiping your phone. Also start the process earlier in the day. Also iBackupBot is a great free tool but nowhere as intelligent as Decipher
Anyways my phone is on 8.3 and I suppose fresher than ever with a nice lean backup restored to it.
